Owakudani is a popular and dynamic volcanic valley located in Hakone, Japan. Formed around 3,000 years ago during the last eruption of Mount Hakone, it is known for its active geothermal activity, with steam vents and bubbling hot springs scattered across the landscape. Visitors to Owakudani can witness the valley’s striking scenery, characterized by rugged terrain and a distinct sulfuric smell that permeates the air.
One of the unique attractions in Owakudani is the "black eggs" (Kuro-tamago), which are regular eggs boiled in the natural hot springs, turning their shells black due to the sulfur in the water. Local legend says that eating one of these eggs can add seven years to your life.
